Delulu is short for "delusional", and online it means believing something with little or no proof, usually something you want to be true. It started as an insult. Now it's mostly a joke people make about themselves: the crush who will definitely text back, the interview that will definitely turn into an offer, the plan that will definitely work out.
What delulu means in slang
People use it in three ways:
- As a confession: "I'm so delulu, I think he's just busy." You know it's a stretch and you're doing it anyway.
- As a roast: "You're delulu if you think that group project will get finished." Friendly, usually.
- As a plan: "Delulu is the solulu." Acting as if the good outcome is already coming, so you might actually get there.
Where it comes from
The word grew out of K-pop fandom, where fans used it for people who believed they were dating an idol. From there it spread to TikTok and Instagram around 2022 and 2023 and lost the mean edge. Today it covers any hopeful, slightly unrealistic thinking, from dating to money to fitness goals.
Is being delulu good or bad?
It depends on whether you check your bank balance afterwards. A little delusion gets you to send the message, apply for the job or walk into the room like you belong there. A lot of it gets you ghosted by someone who never knew you were dating. The joke works because most people sit somewhere in between.
